Samsung appears willing to concede on 2G-3G in order to prepare for a push into NG/4G

InterDigital / Samsung Licensing Arrangement | www.informationweek.com
The details of how the agreement has been structured are limited but inferences can be drawn from past agreements, Samsung's market position, IPR and product developments and the shifts in standards development and industry structuring: The agreement covers only until 2012. Samsung has lagged as a supplier of 3G infrastructure and is unlikely to gather much momentum against the strong competitive field. However, Samsung has made heavy commitments to development of IEEE 802.16 WiMAX and LTE that has resulted in a more substantial patent portfolio and potential gains in market share for their products. This can be seen as a necessary step to get litigation and contention out of the way but might also be viewed as clearing the table for a shift to next generation product offerings which will be covered by the new regimen of MIMO-AAS-OFDMA IPR used in the evolving WiMAX and LTE platforms.
