DSL

DSL is the acronym for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL electronics have allowed telephone companies to take advantage of the large quantities of copper lines still in their networks. Data transmission including for high-speed modems over copper became possible. It has been very hard in the U.S. with the high demand for channels to provide Fiber To The Node (FTTN) video delivery (using IPTV) because the DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) is not close to customer premises. There have been two major types of DSL deployed: ADSL (asymmetric) DSL for principally transporting bandwidth downstream; and VDSL (very-high rate) DSL for FTTN applications.
