Targeted therapies have incraesed response rates in several advanced cancers such as colorectal, renal, pancreatic , and non-small lung cancer.
None of the natural compounds have been approved as a medication yet in the US.
Many of the "targeted " agents such as Avastin, Nexavar, and Tarceva, have serious side effects such as hypertension, increased bleeding, rash, fatigue, diarrhea , and increased infection rates.
Analysis
Almost al the FDA approved 'Targeted therapies" for treatment of advanced metastatic cancer in the US are phramchological compunds that are NOT naturally occuring.
The leading agent is the anti-angiogenic agent , Avastin ( Genentech) taht is approved for treatment of metastatic colorectal carcionoma, and has a role in treatment of renal cell carcinoma, and breast cancer. Mian side effects are increased bleeding/bruising, rash, nausea, diarrhea, and increased risk for infections
Other trageted therapies are Nexavar ( Bayer/Onyx ) for renal cell carcionoma and Tarceva ( Genentech/OSI) for pancreatic cancer and non-small lung cancer. Both drugs are assocaited with increased events of hypertension, proteinuria, incraesed bleeding, rashes, fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea.
The natural product Avemar mentioned in the report is approved in US as anutritional supplement , but not as chemotherapy.
