Summary

1. Weight loss may improve carbohydrate metabolism in patients with  Type 2 DM 2. Weight loss is difficult to maintain even in these patients 3. There is more to curing type 2 DM then losing weight

Analysis

Weight loss of significant degree can help to ameliorate the signs and symptoms of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus but is it a "cure"? the answer has to be no at this point in time since we still don't know the molecular basis of diabetes and multiple genes and environmental factors are at play in its causation. Hence claims of curing type 2 DM are really false hype. There is no doubt that weight loss will alleviate the insulin resistance associated with this disorder but there is also the problem of beta cell failure which is not addressed directly by weight loss. So depending on the length of diabetes prior to surgery the effects may be quite mixed in terms of improving carbohydrate control. Since weight loss is difficult to maintain even in these patients after surgery any imporvement in carbohydrate control may pove to be transitory
