Another Vytorin Mess For Merck | www.forbes.com
Abbott Laboratories' (ABT.N) Niaspan, though inexpensive and older, lowered HDL and shrunk artery diameter in heart patients more effectively and safely than Merck & Co's (MRK.N) moderately expensive Zetia.Though there is little reason for doctors to prescribe Zetia now, there are real cautions about Niaspan that many people with liver concerns will appreciate. And so will their physicians. An alternative and winning intervention, essentially unexplored by Pharma, is diet.

Cardiac-Resynchronization Therapy for the Prevention of Heart Failure Events | content.nejm.org
While this trial had a positive endpoint, it was not a mortality endpoint. A major defect is a lack of a medical therapy alone arm. That said, prevention of heart failure episodes is a laudable goal and given the expense to the US system of CHF, this could be a worthwhile treatment, however the number of patients to benefit will be quite small.

Novartis gets FDA approval for combo pill valturna to treat high BP | councils.glgroup.com
The FDA have approved a combination of Aliskiren and Valsartan in a fixed dose preparation for the treatment of hypertension. Although initial safety data show efficacy and tolerability in an 8-week study, outcome data on real-life use and in "non-standard" cases of hypertension or other disorders suggests caution be the watchword. Where the 'R' fits into the 'ABCD' algorithm is unclear, as the B is already on the way out and it also lowers renin.
