An Inconvenient Truth: Intel Larrabee story revealed | www.brightsideofnews.com
A lot has been said about Intel's Larrabee, the chip that was supposed to propel Intel into the graphics space and devastate AMD and nVidia. Sadly, Intel missed a lot of internal targets. After a recent conversation with several engineers that mentioned "we need another 13-18 months to get [Larrabee] out", the alarm bell just went off.

CMO will ramp 8.5G production in Taiwan | www.digitimes.com
CMO will obey government restrictions after suspicions that it planned AMLCD fab ventures in China. AMLCD demand is rebounding from a trough in Q1’09 and CMO was able to secure funding that should sustain it over the mid term despite ending Q2’09 with 113% net debt. Larger sums are more difficult to obtain and CMO can only afford to complete fab build-out it suspended in 2008. Asahi Glass may take some share from Corning because it is the main supplier of seventh-generation glass to CMO and it is the second-source of eighth-generation glass to Samsung Electronics.

Even 2-D Users Will Miss Nvidia's Integrated 3-D Graphics on Core i3/i5 Systems

Nvidia Escalates Feud With Intel | online.wsj.com
Nvidia's chipsets outperform Intel's when it comes to integrated 3-D graphics, but Intel's move to incorporate graphics into its Core i3/i5 CPUs leaves no room for Nvidia's integrated solution. Too bad! Windows 7's DirectCompute feature speeds up media operations on systems with AMD or Nvidia discrete or integrated GPUs, but won't work with Intel's integrated graphics. Even users who don't care about 3-D may notice this media deceleration on Core i3/i5 systems that lack discrete GPUs.

NXP merges STB business with Trident | www.telecompaper.com
The huge cost of developing TV ICs means that there aren't enough opportunities to go round. Micronas concluded that the reward didn't justify the risk, and NXP is in the sameposition, hastened by its debt burden. NXP is effectively contracting the restructure to Trident, which is shouldering the risk of restructuring and consolidation to end up as one of the last men standing.

Nvidia leaps into supercomputers

Nvidia and "Starting the Next Age of Personal Computing" | www.tgdaily.com
Nvidia is in the test of its life with big stakes, big investments, and big risks – Fermi is a hail Mary pass if ever there was one. It’s not as reactionary or impulsive as some have suggested and a plan I think has been in the process for the past three years. Nvidia has been putting the pieces in place for the Fermi product through acquisition, industry initiatives and setting up the platform. One of Jen Hsun Hung’s strengths is his long range vision and I think you can see it at work here.
