Google's Rumored Acquisition of Expedia Would be a Surprise

Expedia Shares Rally on Takeover Rumors | www.reuters.com
EXPE shares rise on another round of GOOG acquisition rumors. Acquiring a large and complex global travel agency with an extensive customer care organization and supplier account management group would be a significant departure from Google's 50+ previous technology oriented acquisitions. The travel industry represents one of Google's largest sources of advertising revenue - an acquisition of Expedia could be highly disruptive as OTAs and suppliers would reevaluate advertising spend supporting their largest competitor.

Travelocity to Waive Flight-Booking Fees - Will OWW match? | online.wsj.com
Using hotel commissions to subsidise OTAs income from flight bookings is all well and dandy until such time that hotels choose to go commission-free! This has already happened in the budget/lodge sector and may well spread to the entire hotel industry. Airline overrides (remember those from the 20th century!) were increasingly withdrawn when traditional travel agents started using the override income to rebate back to the corporate client to win more business. This action of Travelocity & Expedia is likely to make hoteliers move in this direction! Very counter-productive
