UPDATE 4-Nokia Siemens to cut 5,800 jobs, save $1.5 bln | www.reuters.com
Last year, 2008, I had noted that the telecom manufacturers would get slammed and hammered by the recession. It is going to get worse before it gets better. Even if you assume that 2010 will be the end of the recession, the end will not result in instant sales of handsets. If anything there will be a consumer delay. People will be employed with new jobs, pay old bills, pay current bills, and then focus on the things like fancy new costly handsets.

UPDATE 2-Leap Wireless cuts 2009 subscriber adds view | www.reuters.com
Both Leap's Cricket and MetroPCS are lowering their projected customer totals in the face of holiday promotions by the Tier 1 carriers. Perhaps being the low cost provider of services might be more sustainable if a combined company could achieve the lowest operating costs. Aside from combining operations, lease optimization might be an easier way to cut operating costs.
